The Pan- African Pyramid has announced the fifth edition of the Pan- African Pyramid Global Awards also commonly known as PAP Global Awards slated for 26 of August 2022 at Fairway hotel and Spa In Kampala.
The long awaited ceremony was announced by the Founding PAP speaker and Chairman Andrew Irumba Katusabe noting that this year’s awards have been dedicated to Asians for their social, political and economic contributions in Africa and Uganda in particular.
Further focusing on Asians in Uganda, Chairman Andrew Irumba noted that despite the fact that all Asians were sent packing from Uganda 50 years ago by president Idi Amin Dada who defended the expulsion by arguing that he was “giving Uganda back to ethnic Ugandans”, the Asian community upon their return have greatly contributed to Uganda’s economic development and Africa at large and for that reason their contributions should be recognised.
It’s worth noting that in August 1972, President Idi Amin, ordered the expulsion of Uganda’s Asian minority, giving them an ultimatum of 90 days to leave the country. At the time of the expulsion, there were about 80,000 individuals of Indian descent in Uganda, of whom 23,000 had their applications for citizenship both processed and accepted. The expulsion took place against the backdrop of Anti-Indian sentiment in Uganda, with Amin accusing a minority of the Asians of disloyalty, nonintegration, and commercial malpractice, claims that Indian leaders disputed.
However according to Chairman Irumba, 50 years later the narrative has since changed and the social ,political and economic contributions by the Asian community especially in Uganda cannot go unnoticed thus dedicating this year’s awards to them further noting that the new Pan-Africanism that he is personally fighting to revive is not based on skin color, race or geographical boundaries but rather idiology.
”The Pan-African Pyramid is propagating for a new Pan-Africanism concept. The new Pan-Africanism need not to be based on race, Skin and color but ideology. It advocates for the unification of Africa by economic development and Trans-African trade, and not by political actors only but by corporate business intities”, Chairman Irumba noted.
Adding that”at this 50th commemoration of the expulsion of Asians from Uganda, the Pan-African Pyramid shall award leading Asian industrialists and entrepreneurs who have contributed to the economic development of Uganda and Africa 50 years later”.
Meanwhile the event which usually attracts Pan-Africanists across the globe both physically and online has been sponsored by NBS television, the Spy Uganda and Fairway Hotel.
